Graeme Langlands

Graeme 'Changa' Langlands MBE started his football career in Wollongong and represented Illawarra against the touring English side in 1962. Illawarra won 18 -10. He was magnificent in this game and continually stopped the unstoppable Dick Huddart who, when he later joined Saints, frequently claimed that he had made Chang.

His performance in this match led to his selection in the Country side, and, after seeing him play, many city clubs were anxious to gain him.

Fortunately, for all Saints fans, he made decision sign with St George.

He was captain of Saints from 1971-1976 and captain coach from 1972-1976. He also captained Australia 1970-1972 and was captain coach 1973-1975.

He was a points scoring machine and continually confounded doctors by taking the field with injuries that would have sidelined most players.

His achievements are outstanding but one of his greatest was at the Sydney Cricket Ground in 1974. The Test series was tied and the Poms were leading at half time - the Test appeared, to many, to be well lost. But this giant of a footballer, whose worst fear was losing a game, took the ball from the kick-off and rather than run it out he elected to kick in order to put pressure on the Poms, he found touch about 40 yards out and eventually scored. He followed this up with a penalty goal. Within a 10 minute period in the second half Australia scored 12 points from two tries and three goals. Australia won the game and retained the Ashes. He was the first player to score 100 points in Tests against England and the delirious crowd picked up the chant, 'CHANGA, CHANGA, CHANGA'.

Chook says that,

"His love for the St George Jumper was completely overwhelming and he hated getting beaten. He was the worst I've ever seen as far as getting beaten is concerned."

Chang was renowned for his magnificent goal kicking, devastating defence, his acceleration and famous side step. The genius of this champion enthralled Saints' fans for man

years.
