'He'd
take anyone on. It wouldn't matter how big or tough they were, he'd
have a shot. He was tough as teak,' recalls
Steve Edge
Billy Smith, St
George's nuggetty halfback and playmaker in the '60s and '70s, was
one of the most exciting stars in the Rugby League firmament for 17
seasons of first grade action. His fitness, toughness, tactical genius,
and rock-solid commitment inspired the love and loyalty of countless
fans and teammates, for whom he was the 'Little General.'
Billy Smith: A Saint from Head to Toe brings back the excitement
and passion of the era when Saints ruled the competition for over
a decade of amazing, gritty, heart-stoppingly brilliant football.
Norm Provan called him, 'The best halfback that I’ve seen.' Ian Walsh
remembers him as, 'One of the gutsiest halfbacks I've ever played with.' Robert
Stone says, 'His mental toughness and his vision were miles ahead of anyone
else in the game.' Keith Barnes said, 'Billy Smith typifies the word "courage." He
doesn’t know the meaning of the word defeat.'
From 1961 to 1977, Billy Smith played 234 first grade games and an additional
62 reserve and third-grade games, captained St George, New South Wales,
and Australia, and played in six grand finals, four of them premierships.
Billy Smith: A Saint from Head to Toe, the first in a series
of books about some of the Dragons greatest players, relives some
of the great moments with riveting game descriptions, behind-the-scenes
background stories, personal remembrances, and expert commentary.
